Scabal
The Brussels house that invented the fabric bunch — and then spent eighty years weaving the impossible: diamond, gold and vicuña, direct into cloth.
A passion for cloth, taken literally
Scabal was founded in Brussels in 1938 by Otto Hertz, a second-generation cloth merchant. The name is an acronym — Société Commerciale Anglo Belgo Allemande et Luxembourgeoise — for a house that traded across England, Belgium, Germany and Luxembourg. In 1946 Scabal invented the fabric ‘bunch,’ the swatch-book format every tailor on earth uses today.
Since then it has made a habit of firsts: the first 16.25-micron ‘Golden Carat’ Super 150's in 1990, the first cloth woven with diamond fragments in 2001, and Summit — a wool so fine it cannot be accurately measured. Family-owned, woven in its own Huddersfield mill, from its flagship at No. 12 Savile Row.
Founded — Otto Hertz founds Scabal in Brussels as a textile merchant.
The Bunch — Scabal invents the fabric bunch — the industry's standard swatch book.
Savile Row — Opens at No. 12 Savile Row, London — its home ever since.
The Mill — Acquires the Bower Roebuck mill in Huddersfield, England.
Diamond Chip — The first cloth woven with microscopic diamond fragments.
“A passion for cloth.”
