Dormeuil

Paris · Est. 1842

The French luxury cloth merchant since 1842 — five generations of invention, from the woven selvedge to the world's first traceable cloth.

The Heritage

A Parisian with an English accent

In 1842, Jules Dormeuil was just 22 when he decided to import the finest English cloth into France. His brothers Alfred and Auguste joined in 1858, and in 1863 the company became Dormeuil Frères. A London shop followed in 1871, exports reached Africa and Asia by 1880, and a first New York office opened in 1905 — the three rams' heads on the 1860 family crest stand for Jules, Alfred and Auguste.

Dormeuil's history is a history of firsts: Pierre Dormeuil's Sportex in 1922, the woven selvedge in 1927, Xavier Dormeuil's Tonik in 1957, Amadeus in 1991, Exel — the first pure-wool cloth with natural stretch, no elastane — in 2016, and Tonik Wool, the first cloth traceable by blockchain, in 2017. Family-owned for five generations, its luxury bunches are woven in its traditional mills in England (and in Italy for vicuña).

From Fleece to Cloth

It starts with the woven selvedge

Dormeuil invented the woven selvedge in 1927 — the tailor's signature woven into the edge of the cloth. It's still there on every length: Amadeus, Tonik Wool, Ambassador. When you see the name on the edge, you know the cloth came from the house that invented the game.
